Ilparakuo means ‘Nomad’ in Maa,
the language of the Maasai.

This community owned ecocamp gives travellers a once in a lifetime opportunity to stay with a Maasai community and to share their culture and traditions.

Unlike tourist attractions, this camp has been built to offer more than just a glimpse of the ancient and special Maasai way of life. Guests at Ilparakuo have the chance to immerse themselves in a different way of life, learning how the community live, and to take part, not in staged activities, but meaningful shared experiences.

The community created their camp to provide income to pay for school fees for their children, so that they can access education that they would otherwise be denied. They want to develop their camp as a community interest business to return any profit into improving their lives.

Having been affected by drought, and suffered through the loss of their livestock, the community have invested what they have into creating a wonderful camp that travellers can share.

‘ilaramatak’

When looking for a Maa word to describe what the community wanted to offer visitors, they decided on ‘ilaramatak’, which translates as ‘to tenderly care for’ or ‘to nurture’.

It is such a fitting description for what is the ethos of the camp. The Maasai hosts want to care for their guests, while nurturing their own community and the local wildlife. Ilparakuo camp is a place for visitors to feel the strength of ‘ilaramatak’ in a broad sense, and to be part of the impact.

Amazing People - Amazing Place

Our time at Ilparakuo was one of the most amazing times of our lives. The people in the community are more than welcoming and made our stay really special. The amount of different animals we were able to see was absolutely unbelievable.

Fantastic Experience
